Difference between stock broker and day trader

Trading and investing both involve seeking profit in the stock market, but they pursue that goal in different ways. Traders jump in and out of stocks within weeks, days, even minutes, with the aim a trader is someone who buys and sells financial instruments such as stocks, bonds and derivatives. A broker who simply fills buy or sell orders is not a trader, as they are merely executing instructions given to them. Traders are either professionals working in a financial institution or a corporation, or individual investors, or day traders. In parallel to stock trading, starting at the end of the 1990s, several new market maker firms provided foreign exchange and derivative day trading through electronic trading platforms. These allowed day traders to have instant access to decentralised markets such as forex and global markets through derivatives such as contracts for difference.

The main differences between day trading and investing are the activity levels and position holding times. Day trading involves active management with a short-term holding period, whereas investing involves passive management with a longer-term holding time horizon usually spanning from multiple quarters to years. While both brokers and traders deal in securities, brokers are also sales agents, who act either on their own behalf or for a securities or brokerage firm. They are responsible for obtaining and maintaining a roster of regular individual customers, also known as retail customers and/or institutional customers. Trading activity is usually limited by a risk manager and by the amount of money a firm has. Retail trading accounts, on the other hand, are much simpler. A retail trader will choose a broker, open up an account and make a deposit. After that, the trader can simply start making trades. Brokers exist at both banks and at independent firms called brokerages; the difference is that these smaller agency-brokers are pure middlemen and only fulfill orders while large banks have a lot more going on. There’s more to it than that and as with other areas of trading, the dividing lines can get blurry, A stock trader is an investor in the financial markets, an amateur trading for himself or a professional trading on behalf of a financial company. more Mutual Fund Definition
