Su damper oil viscosity
Suspension Fluid Viscosity Chart. Some of you have changed out your suspension fluid to a heavier or lighter weight fluid or so you thought to change the damping of your suspension. The problem that comes into play here is manufacturers are not playing by any set of rules so it seems, Ones 5wt will be some others 15wt. It is only necessary to keep these tubes topped up with oil, leaving a little space for the damper. Any more oil will overflow and it will quickly get sucked into the engine and burnt. In the case of SU’s without dampers, they still require oil every 1,000 miles, but the oil merely lubricates the guide tube. It has no damping effect. Barrie Jones SU Dashpot oil - manufactured for the specific application of SUs in STANDARD applications. That is on engines that are completely standard as the manufacturer produced them. It is a little on the thin side, but the whole engine tuning data for each engine is based on using this oil. Used as such it works very well, especially where economy is the main goal and the car is driven very sympathetically. You can buy specific dashpot oil for the SU carburettors,..Penrite make some. Alternatively, standard 20W-50 engine oil is perfectly satisfactory with a standard engine. As for how much, unscrew the piston rod. If when you put the piston back into the dashpot you feel resistance from the oil before the cap rests against the dashpot, then you have sufficient oil to do the job properly. SU carbs are not that sensitive to oil level in the dashpots, and you've got the proper weight oil in there. All the oil does is regulate the carb pistons' movement during acceleration and prevent them from chattering during idle and cruise. If there's oil in there, you're OK. For initial setting of the carbs, refer to the owner's manual, as it provides the best starting point.
The dashpot assembly is filled with oil of appropriate viscosity. I'll explain the meaning of “appropriate” later in the text. The butterfly (throttle) is partially open

SU DAMPER OIL is a Mineral based oil containing anti-corrosion and anti-wear additives for the lubrication of pistons and dampers in SU and Stromberg carburettors. Application SU DAMPER OIL is suitable for post 1940 vehicles using SU and Stromberg carburettors incorporating a damper in the dashpot assembly. This will be due to the fact that when using a normal engine oil that thickens when it is cold, the viscosity of the oil in the damper mechanism is high and the degree of enrichment attained when opening the throttle is therefore greater than when the engine has reached its normal operating temperature. In other words, if there is resistance, then it has enough oil. A lot of people make the mistake of over filling. Ideally, the viscosity of the oil never changes over a wide temperature range. According to Calvin's Corner (on a mini web site)the best oil for use is synthetic 20-40 motor oil. Therefore they often use the same oil in their SU dampers. I believe this is a mistake, because a 20W/50 would be much too thick once the engine gets hot. Therefore, I prefer to use a non-multigrade oil such as a straight 20 grade oil in the dampers. Remember, all oils get thinner as they get hotter.
