Viognier is seductive, luscious and unctuous. A veritable flavour bomb of exotic musk, rose petal, apricot, white peach, ginger, citrus blossoms and a rich and unctuous, silky texture. Viognier first caught Yalumba’s eye in the early 1970s, when the chief viticulturist visited the Rhône Valley in France and the variety’s spiritual home in the appellations of Condrieu and Côte Rôtie. Viognier wine displays a complex nose and exciting flavors that can include flowers, perfume, spice, apricot and pears. With medium to low acidity and often relatively high alcohol, Viognier is a fresh and perfumed wine when aged in stainless steel. Viognier is a dry, white wine with a full body and distinctive floral aromas. redolent of a full bouquet of flowers, stone and tropical fruits and a dash of spice. It is lower in acidity than most white wines, lending to its heavy impression on the palate. While a whiff of Viognier might suggest sweet flavors, these wines are typically quite dry. Viognier originates from Southern France, in the Northern Rhone region of Condrieu. This is where it produces some of the finest wines from this wonderful grape variety. According to the legend, Probus, the Roman Emperor introduced it in the region.
